I use the following rubric to grade the condition of used books I’m selling. Ex-Library copies and Book Club editions are always noted, no matter what the overall condition.
- ‘As New’ – The same immaculate condition as when it was published. No missing pages or library stamps. The dust jacket should have no signs of wear.
- ‘Fine‘ – Approaches the condition of ‘As New’, but lacks the same crispness. No defects. Any small tears to the jacket are noted.
- ‘Very Good‘ – Some small signs of wear. No tears on the binding or paper. Any defects noted.
- ‘Good‘ – The average used or worn book, with all pages and leaves present. Any defects noted.
- ‘Fair‘ – A worn book with complete text pages and/or insert sheets. May lack end papers, half-title, etc. Binding and jacket may also be worn. All defects noted.
- ‘Poor‘ – Sufficiently worn legible and complete text with sole merit as a reading copy. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, spotted, or have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc. Missing maps or plates (all text will be intact) are noted.
- ‘Binding Copy‘ – Pages or leaves are perfect. The binding is very bad, loose, off, or non-existent.
